Historic Preservation

Purpose: An Ad hoc committee to address preservation issues and encourage preservation of historic buildings..

Activity: As preservation issues develop, committee members, with volunteers from the Leadership Group or Friends Group, seek a resolution. It is their responsibility to be alert to challenges to the integrity of our historic neighborhoods. The members present their concerns to the Executive Committee and then to Leadership. A plan of action is formulated, and a meeting is called to resolve the issue. Meetings are held as necessary.

This committee also organizes the annual Charming Home Tour fundraiser. They identify neighborhoods, making contracts with the homeowners to participate each year. They research the history of each property to train the docent volunteers for each of the homes.

Myrtle Avenue Park Purpose: Civic service project – sponsor a city park in New Smyrna Beach

Activities: Pick up trash in the park at least once a month. Submit a monthly report to the city, detailing activities, noting any issues in the park. Participate in special landscaping projects. A tree was planted and commemorative plaque was installed in recognition of volunteers

Sustainability

PurposeResearching the impact of climate change, land development regulations (LDR), storm impacts, flooding, extreme heat, regional development impacts, population growth and access to potable water.

ActivitiesLong and short-term sustainability initiatives are researched, discussed and action plans are submitted to the Coalition Leadership. Many of these ideas are then presented to the City Commission.

The Sustainability Committee made an audio/visual presentation on the impact of climate change to the citizens of NSB in May of 2023 and is working on a new presentation tentatively called NSB 2035: What will NSB be like in ten years with the goal of encouraging a comprehensive visioning initiative designed to steer sustainable development in each sector of the 41 square mile city. Rather than approving each single development as a standalone, the proposal is to foster a citywide plan for future growth through a series of visioning workshops to develop consensus for a sustainable LDR based on an updated City Charter.

The committee is always looking for new members who have expertise in: Environmental Science; Environmental Legal Issues; Environmental Government Agencies; Coastal Environments; Water Science; Engineering; Architecture; Construction; Planning; Banking and Mortgage Loans; Insurance, Residential and Commercial; Weather; Stormwater; Transportation; Technology; Demographics.
